Go Now!

Time is well and truly up for Tony Blair. With newspapers speculating on the date of his departure, Blair seems to be desparately clinging on to office in a style reminiscent of the last days of the Thatcher administration.

As MP's are telling him to go, the former Blairite MP Tom Watson has resigned

Following this potentially damaging resignation Blair is now critically weakened. Plans for a smooth transition and the coronation of Gordon Brown now seem doubtful with left-wing MP John McDonnell having already launched his leadership campaign and rumours of a cabinet level challenge, possibly Stalinist bully-boy John Reid

As Blair is weak, it makes the 23rd September demonstration more important than ever. We must send the message to the new leader that we will not go away and that the morally defunct New Labour machine cannot continue with its assaults on working class people and cannot continue to blindly follow on the coat tails of the US in their imperialist wars. It is the strength of the anti-war movement that has helped to weaken Blair and we must continue to show our strength in the wake of new challenges to come

It all reminds me of this wonderful Spitting Image piece when the knives were out for Thatcher

I noticed you hadn't posted for a while, so I thought I'd share some thoughts about what's been happening recently.

A racist hysteria of a kind not seen since the 1930s is being whipped up and directed against Muslims. This climate of fear has been promoted and is part of the disastrous ‘war on terror’ which the government supports and which has made Britain more vulnerable, not less, to terrorism.

Following Jack Straw’s inappropriate remarks concerning the niqab there have been a series of speeches by government ministers designed to demonise British Muslims, thus legitimising an unprecedented level of racism and provoking verbal and physical violence aimed at Muslim people. It has been noticed that recent attacks on mosques have not been condemned by many politicians and commentators.

The freedom we all take for granted to dress and to worship as we choose is being denied to Muslims. No-one is asking university lecturers to spy on students who might be Christian fundamentalists as they are being asked to spy on ‘Asian-looking’ students. No-one tells Sikhs, orthodox Jews or Catholic clergy, or even punks or goths, that they have to change the way they dress. And no-one has suggested that David Blunkett was an incompetent MP just because he could not see his constituents’ facial expressions.

We should reject this anti-Muslim hatred, support the values of tolerance which are under attack and express solidarity with all British people of the Muslim faith.

Thanks peacenik,
I have been otherwise engaged for a while and have missed a lot since then! I have added a post about the People's Assembly in London on the 18th November. There is information about how to book on the STWC website.
I agree, this has everything to do with a weak government who is losing the war on terror and it looks as though much the same is happening in America with public support at an all time low and Bush being described in opinion polls as the most unpopular President ever. Looks like he is going to get a trouncing in the elections too and leave him like a sitting duck.
It would be good if we could build the People's Assembly into a big event and show that not everyone is lining up with the reactionaries and racists
